| Bellevue - Friday night the Spartans traveled to Bellevue West to take on the Thunderbirds. The Spartan offense really got going and the defense provided some great hits and turnovers. Despite a 45-16 blowout the Spartans still lacked the mental game. Dropped punt returns, a long pass, a bad snap and a few fumbles here and there prevented the Spartans from potentially clobbering the Thunderbirds somthing like 59-0. Millard North did beat Bellevue West 55-0. So, the potential is there. Each Spartan must do his part and eliminate the mistakes and great things can happen to this team. The black bands worn on the players left leg were for Andrew Hutchison's father, who passed away this week. David Carey recovered a Patrick Spangler fumble on a quarterback sneek to put the Spartans on the board in the first quarter. Saul Bakewell rushed for 83 total yards and scored from 1 yard out and 9 yards. Matt Pottadle rushed for 70 yards including a 42 yard T.D. scamper. But, it was David Carey's second interception, that went 40 yards for an East touchdown, that provided the spark needed to stop the Thunderbirds momentum. The Spartan offense started the game out with an early fumble followed by 112 yards and seven first quarter first downs to a minus 1 yard second quarter. Ben Johnson also recorded a touchdown for the Spartans and Tony Tabatabai (Tubby Tubby) kicked a field goal and 6 extra points. The defense, lead by state leading tackler Brent Gritton, recorded several big hits and in addition to the interceptions by Carey also recovered key fumbles for the the Spartans. |
