Grand Island, NE - The Lincoln East Spartans attended the Islander's homecoming and spoiled the party at Memorial Stadium. A first quarter fumble after receiving the kickoff allowed Grand Island to jump out to an early 7-0 first quarter lead. The last six minutes of the second quarter and one and a half minutes of the third quarter was all East High needed to win the game. Saul Bakewell rushed 3 yards to give the Spartans their first touchdown of the season. Minutes later a Casey Roberts recovery allowed Matt Potadle to scamper 20 yards for a second Spartan touchdown. Brent Gritton recovered another Grand Island fumble to set up a Pat Spangle to Jordan Pool touchdown scoring pass. Pool was able to wrestle the ball from the defender. Seconds before the end of the half Tony Tabatabai gave the Spartans a 23-7 halftime lead with a 40 yard field goal. After stopping Grand Island on their first possession, Bakewell scored to give the Spartans a comfortable 31-7 lead. Many second and third team players were feeling their turn to enter the game. Then, East went from it's best football of the season to it's worst. Grand Island scored a touchdown and East was remembering Northeast all over again. The Islander momentum spoiled the debuts of some dedicated and deserving seniors that were looking for some playing time after the start of the third quarter. The first string offense and defense were needed to salt the game away . The final Spartan touchdown came with less than 3 minutes with a beautiful end around by David Carey and highlighted with a block by Bakewell that put an Islander into the turf. East's drive to the playoff's got started with a 38-16 win over Grand Island.
