| Lincoln, NE. - Friday night 4,156 fans were ready for an exciting cross town rivarly between state powerhouse Southeast Knights and Lincoln East. Southeast dashed the Spartan hopes that this would be the season when Tony Potthoff recovered a Spartan opening kickoff return fumble for a 30 yard touchdown. The Spartans hammered home two more touchdowns with passes from Jim Dawson to Trent Price before things started to get ugly for the Spartans.
East had lost it's senior leadership with injuries to Ben Johnson and other East players including a head injury to their starting quarterback Jim Epke. Epke was later driven to the hospital for a CT scan on his head. The depleted Spartans managed a two minute drive by Terrance Maahs and the Spartans before falling injuried himself. Sophomore quarterback Jordan Clark was put in a tough position to try and get a touchdown for the Spartans. The drive stalled however, and Spud Mann managed a 32 yard field goal to get the Spartans on the board before half.
The second half started out with a Knight 70 yard drive capped off by a 2 yard dive by Trent Neeman. That was the end of the scoring 28-3 before tragedy set in. When Southeast kicked off Brady Beran collided with a Knight and was helped off the field. Minutes later Brady found himself in trouble as complications set in and the game suddenly became of no significance. Players, parents, students and fans all prayed as Brady was taken from the field in a resue unit to Bryan West Hospital. A rescue unit used to be present at the games but due to budget cuts several critical moments passed as Brady was waiting to be taken to the hospital. Brady remained on the critical list as of Saturday morning following surgery Friday evening.
The 2004 Knights has started to crawl out of their 0-2 start to even their record at 2-2 while the Spartans who have played the state two historical powerhouses the past two weeks find themselves 1-3 and wondering who will play next week.
