| Lincoln, NE. - Eighth ranked Lincoln Southwest rolled over the Spartans with 438 yards rushing and a 49-28 victory before 3,416 fans.
Southwest broke out for an early lead in the first period before Jim Ebke found Mike Goettle open and he scampered 44 yards to tie the game. Sam Meginnis stripped the ball on the kickoff and Quinn Kilgore recovered for the Spartans. Ebke then covered 3 yards to score and put the Spartans on top 14-7. East could not find a way to stop the Southwest running game. Ollie Sloup and Zach Lovell lead the Silver Hawks with over 100 hundreds rushing. Four other Southwest backs rushed over 40 yards. Southwest used over 34 players to run down Spartans and take a 29-14 halftime lead.
East had their chances early when Alex Matczyszyn and Tyler McManaman collided on a wide open pass thrown by Ebke. Southwest players have participated at the varsity level for three years. Senior leadership and many players contributing made the warm afternoon much easier for the Silver Hawks. East kept battling and Garek Petry intercepted a third quarter Southwest pass. Ebke finished off the break with a 32 yard pass to Drew Winkler to close within 14 points. But it was Lovell that broke the Spartans back and any chance of a come back, with a 69 yard run for a touchdown. Petry rapped up the Spartan scoring by taking a 4 yard pass from Ebke.
The Silver Hawks avenged last seasons 17-0 beating by the Spartans. The Silver Hawks were on a mission when the Seniors lead the captains out for the coin toss. It was very obvious that Southwest was big, in very good shape and everyone willing to pitch in to get their school to a top ten ranking. Sometimes that process becames a little too aggessive however, when Southwest forgot that East kneeled the final minutes of the game to respect the game the Silver Hawks played. Southwest ran the ball most of the time and a 24 pass very late in the game by their top quarterback was probably not appreciated by the Spartans fans. However, that gives the Spartans something to think about next summer.
