Lincoln, NE - Before a hugh crowd of 4,777 at Seacrest , the Northeast Rockets used their speed in the second half to slow down and run past the East Spartans 17-7. East came into the first big contest at 5-0 and ranked 7th in the state while Northeast was 4-1 and 8th in the state.

The Spartans came out and showed some nerves early with a second play fumble that gave the ball to the Rockets deep in Spartan territory. East's defense came up big and held the Rockets to a field goal attempt that came up short. The Northeast defense was definitely outmanned in size but, the quick defensive scheme shut down the Spartans on the next series and all night to force East to punt. Northeast's punt returner showed their speed all night and setup great field position for the Rocket offense. Tory Berks of Northeast setup the first return of 29 yards and gave the Rockets great field position. Eight plays later Will Highfield scored on a 3 yard run to give the Rockets a 7-0 lead but, not before Jim Ebke missed an interception that could have resulted in a score the other way.

East settled down from the early nerves and responded by marching down the field and capping the drive off with a spectacular run by Jim Ebke. The offensive line created a big hole and Ebke broke several tackles on the way to a 38 yards run for a touchdown. The score remained tied at half-time 7-7 as both defenses shut each other down.

Northeast took the opening second half kickoff down the field 66 yards before the Spartans forced the Rockets to take a field goal from 20 yards. The Spartans broke through the line and partially blocked the kick but, it limped over the post to take a 10-7. East marched back down the field and was stalled to give Ebke a try from 52 yards on a field goal attempt. The attempt was blocked but, Northeast was called for a 12-man on the field penalty. East attempted another field goal from 36 yards but, flew wide right.

East came up big in the fourth quarter when the defense stuffed a 4th and one attempt by Northeast but, East could not get by the speed of the Northeast defense. The speed of the punt returns and the speed of Tyler Collier, who was shut down on a sweep to the right but, using his speed which directions and scampered 60 yards to close the door on the Spartans.
