| Lincoln, NE - It might of taken two days to do it but, the Lincoln Southeast dominance over Lincoln East is over. The Spartan line controlled the line of scrimmage and held on to win over the Knights 21-14 after a suspension of the game due to lightning.
A large crowd of 4,324 fans watched as Lincoln East owned the first quarter Friday night and the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon. Jim Ebke rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener against tenth ranked Southeast. When played resumed on Saturday the Spartans ate up 10:07 of the fourth quarter with a 20 play series that ended on a missed field goal by Ebke.
The last time Lincoln East had defeated Lincoln Southeast was 20 years ago in 1986. The seniors playing for the Spartans had not even been born. Nineteen seniors provided the leadership that the program needed from a disaster two years ago against Southeast and two very tough years to showing only those close to program the potential they had against North Platte last season. That win last fall provided the energy needed to prepare for the up coming sesaon and now their own two game winning streak.
The list of superlatives would go for pages as every member of this team who contributed to this victory. The Spartans have the numbers and the size to compete in Nebraska Class A football. Spartans will try to redeem themselves next week against Grand Island. Grand Island was the only team that really spanked the Spartans last season and they are coming off a victory over Lincoln High 35-6. Get out and support your Spartans because they are back and making some noise.
Interesting sidelight to the game was last week Larry the Cable guy visited the Husker practice. This website thought it would be a cute idea to put up GET ER DONE on the message to the players prior to the game. Larry the Cable guy was at the ballgame Friday night watching with his family. The irony was the Spartans GOT ER DONE.
