Lincoln, NE - The 3,425 fans were treated with a great football game as the second ranked Southwest Silverhawks squeaked by the eighth ranked Spartans 19-24. Statistically the game was as close as the score. Deduct two great athletic plays by Austin Cassidy and Olie Sloup of breaking tackles to romp 73 and 71 yards to touchdowns, and East dominates 19-12 and holds Southwest to 122 yards.

The Spartans play was overshadowed by Sloup becoming the all-time scoring leader in Class A football. The game was a battle of defense before Cassidy romped 73 yards with less than a minute to go in the first period. The Spartans marched down the field only fail on a 4th down situation from the Southwest 5 yards line. East dominated the second quarter with 20 plays and 116 yards. But, a few dropped passes kept the Spartans off the board in the first half. A key fumble just before halftime could of been costly as a big play set the Silverhawks up for a 30 yard field goal. Sam Meginnis was able to get a hand on the ball and block the attempt.

East came out of the locker room with fire and took the second half kickoff straight down the field and Garek Petry finished off the drive with a 15 yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked and the Silverhawks still lead 7-6. Petry finished the game with 116 yards on eleven carries for the Spartans. The Silverhawks matched that touchdown when the Spartans had Olie Sloup corralled behind the line of scrimmage on a 3rd down when he broke tackles and ran 71 yards to put the Silverhawks up 14-6. Sloup added a 31 yard field goal later in the quarter. With 8:27 remaining in the game Jim Ebke scored on a 2 yard run and the pass attempt for two failed. Down only 17-12 the Silverhawks scored on a 68 yard drive to go up 24-12. The Spartans showing lots of desire and a never give up attitude, marched right back down the field and scored on a pass from Ebke to Ravi Mahapatra from 14 yards. The onside kickoff bounced off of Micah Fisher and was live for a split second but, the Silverhawks fell on it and finished off the remaining 33 seconds.

Southwest knew they been in a fight to remain undefeated. The respect and relief was evident on the faces of all the Silverhawk players. At the beginning of the season we talked about the eliminating the "What If's" and the Spartans have had many in the Northeast and Southwest games. The game is made up of inches. The championship experience that Southwest had last year may of helped them in the North and East games this season. This great bunch of kids from East has put the Spartans back on the map. The experiences will help them in the playoffs and one or two breaks here or there and it's a different ballgame. The Spartans must get back up and finish the season. A high seeding is on the line against Lincoln High. The Spartans must be prepared.
