Lincoln, NE - An estimated crowd of 2,000 fans, mostly Spartans, came away thinking they were at a replay of the previous week. The great Friday night game was filled with excellent defense, many turnovers, just enough offense and special teams that appeared to be on vacation. The repeat performance had a different ending as the Spartans defeat the North Platte Bulldogs, undefeated and ranked 10th in Class A, by a score of 14-7.

With 6:37 left in game the Spartans pulled off a 88 yard, seven-play drive that was highlighted with a halfback pass from Justin Burns to Drew Sankey for 40 yards. Harry Meginnis finished off the drive with a 14 yard touchdown run.

Meginnis, who finished his best game, rushed for 111 yards on 17 carries. He also covered a huge Spartan mistake on a fumbled snap at the Lincoln East 1 yard line with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

The Spartans were first to get on the board with a 35 yard pass from Scott Sunderman to Sam Witherby after Michael Lau recovered a Joel Woodhead fumble.

The Spartan defense held North Platte's Woodhead, brother of the famous Danny Woodheld, to only 33 yards and created 5 Bulldog turnovers. The Spartans were not free of costly turnovers either when they fumbled on the North Platte 2 yard line. The momentum of the game was crazy as the Spartans owned the first quarter but, were unable to finish a drive. Only a 74 yard punt return by Corey Serrano in the second period allowed the momentum to swing back the Bulldog side of the field. Sam Meginnis, Burns, Tyson Clark and Zachary Smith came up with key interceptions for the Spartans.

Like the previous week the Spartans broke the 7-7 tie with Meginnis's run. But again, Spartan special teams gave up a punt return by North Platte's Serrano that put the ball on the 23 with 1:47 left. Two penalties and a fourth down incomplete pass kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone and preserved the Spartan victory.

Next week the Spartans head to Omaha to take on the Bunnies from Benson. Benson sports a 1-2 record entering the contest.
