Lincoln, NE -For the fourth time this season out of the first five games, East battled a top 10 Class A team. This time the The sixth ranks Elkhorn Antlers, who are full of lineman, fullbacks and strength ran over the Spartans 36-14
The assault included 24 first downs and over 466 yards of offense. The Spartans seemed to close the Antlers down for the first two plays of series and then a big 3rd plass or run would result in long drives for touchdowns.
Elkhorn jumped out on top of East 16-0 before Scott Sunderman hit Sean McClure on a 17 yard pass followed by a 34 yard pass from Sunderman to Drew Sankey. With the ball on the 1-yard line Sunderman polished off the touchdown. A Sunderman pass to Sankey for the extra point put life back into the Spartans as they closed to 16-8. But like many games this season the visitors capped a drive before half and then received the second half kick and would score on the drive. East has played with all top four teams in spurts but, they need to put together a full game with full concentration and no plays off. The Spartans final touchdown came on a pass from Sunderman to Tyson Clark.
District play does not get any easier as they travel to Kearney to take on the Bearcats next Friday. Kearney will take a loss to Southwest into the game.
