Lincoln, NE - Second half defense, special teams and positive turnover margins lead the Spartans to a very successful homecoming game against Norfolk. The Spartan success came from better concentration and improved execution in the second half to defeat the Panthers 38-31 before a sparse 4:30 homecoming crowd.

In a typical East game, the Spartans fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter with a 34 yard field goal by A.J. Spanel and a 1-yard run by Lance Lawson. The opening drive of the second quarter East resulted in an East touchdown when Scott Sunderman found Drew Sankey on a beautiful 21 yard touchdown catch. Norfolk, however answered again after Tyson McGill scampered 56 yards to set up a 1 yard plunge by Lawson. With a commanding 17-7 lead, the Panthers kicked off to East's Drew Zobel and Zobel muffed the return before he found his blockers and ran 81 yards for a touchdown return.

Norfolk on the next series coughed up the ball and Pete Meginnis pounced on the opportunity for the Spartans. Norfolk defense tightened and forced East to settle for a 37 yard field goal by Zac Zmiewski. The rally was short lived and East gave up yet another long touchdown of 72 yards to Lawson. East throughout the year has played hard but, lack of execution on certain plays and falling asleep at the wheel with poor tackling have been thorns in the Spartans side. East has given up 12 touchdowns of 31 yards or better. With the score 24-16 East changed the script from the season with a drive lead by Brice Bostwick , sophomore quarterback who filled in for the injured Scott Sunderman. Bostwick found Tyson Clark on a spectacular 16 yard touchdown catch. East went for two on a pass to Aaron Kilgore and tied the ballgame at half with a 24-24 score.

Enter the defense. East made some adjustments and completely shut out Norfolk in the 3rd quarter. Reece Schwartz timed a Lawson pass and intercepted his second ball for a score and gave the Spartans the lead 31-24 for the first time. In the fourth quarter the Panthers were driving down to the Spartan 30 when Jeff Morrison intercepted a pass and returned the ball 49 yards. That interception set up another East score when Bostwick found Sankey in the corner for a 4 yard touchdown and a 14 point lead. Norfolk managed to make the game exciting when they scored on a Lawson 3 yard run with 1:25 to go. The ensuing on-side kick was recovered by Zobel and Kaleb Mar closed the door on Norfolk with an interception late in the game. Zmiewski kept the Panther return game at hand all night with touchback kickoffs for East. Sean McClure also gave Norfolk poor field position with his punting efforts and also made 3 clutch catches during the night.

The Spartans continue to grow and find a date with cross-town rival Southeast next Friday at Seacrest. Southeast lost to Southwest 28-0 after the East ballgame. The Spartans are finding that football is a game of inches. Football is a game of full concentration and full execution and East is starting to get the hang of it.
