Lincoln, NE - Tyrone Lewis, a past Lincoln Jet, stole the show from the Spartans with two interception touchdowns and 60 rushing yards to hand Class A 10th rated North Star a 21-14 victory in front of 2,054 rain soaked fans.
The Gators came out smoking on all cylinders and marched down the field their opening possession to put North in the lead 7-0. However, the Spartan defense continued to build upon successes and gained valuable experience by limiting the Gators to 16 second half rushing yards. The Spartans held the best team in Lincoln to only one touchdown of offense the whole game.
Quarterback Scott Sunderman took a beating all game with 37 yards rushing on 22 carries and passed for 161 yards. The offense did not quit despite two intercepted touchdowns by Lewis. Film reviewed showed that Lewis had fell during his final play and the screen appeared to be open however, Lewis popped off the ground and leaped 10 feet to bring in the ball in and score for the Gators late in the game with 3:40 left to play. Had Lewis not pulled off the athletic play, the receiver was open with 3 blockers ahead of him. Football is called a game of inches. The past two Spartan teams can feel the pain where 6 plays cost them 5 losses. On the positive side the Spartans battled an undefeated, best in Lincoln, 10th rated North Star team to the end and if you take away either intercepted touchdown, or an interception by Gators inside the red zone prior to the end of the first half, or a fumbled East punt return at mid-field, the Spartans might have smelled upset. But, the Gators were not without mistakes too. North Star fumbled on the 1 yard line and the ball went through the end zone for a touchback and the Gators were guilty of 13 infractions for 140 yards.
Reece Schwartz returned to the Spartan lineup to give the defense a boost and he caught a 30 yards pass from Sunderman to setup up the first Spartan score by Sunderman from 7 yards. The final Spartan score came with 1:49 left in the game when Sunderman found Tyson Clark over the middle for a 38 yard touchdown. Clark was the benefactor of the Spartans first interception of year.
The Spartan improvement from last weeks North Platte game was a real step in the growing and healing stage. East players are finding their roles and the technique on the defensive side of the ball is improving. On the offensive side of the ball the line has to continue to improve and give their quarterback some time to find the open receivers and gain a rushing attack. East has one game left with a very improving Lincoln High team before district play begins. Despite a 0-3 start, including 3 top 10 rated teams, East could find success in district play if they improve week to week and the players play 110% of every block, run or tackle on every play.
