Lincoln, NE - The Spartans make it 3 in a row after a twenty year drought against cross town rival Southeast. A good crowd of 2,497 fans witnessed a 20 point fourth quarter by the Spartans to beat the Knights 26-3.
Southeast got on the board first in the first quarter with a 24 yard field goal by Levi Cockle. The next drive the Spartan moved down the field on a tipped to himself catch of 3 yards by Tyson Clark. That was only a warm up compared to his Matt Davison version of a catch in the end zone on a 27 yard pass from Scott Sunderman. A false start on the extra point required the Spartans to kick again only to fail to the right. Spartans lead for the rest of the half 6-3. Prior to the half Sean McClure hit a Spartan punt 74 yards to pin the Knights at the 1 yard line. The Knights managed to pull away from the goal and run the clock out on the half.
Most of the second quarter and all of the third quarter was a defensive struggle including fumbles, interceptions and punting. The running game was in full swing by both squads and the quarter was played very quickly. Tough running from quarterback position found Sunderman with a game high of 97 yards rushing. Over 100 yards were gained by the Spartans in the fourth quarter. Sunderman lead off the quarter with a 2 yard plunge to give East a 13-0 score. East's final two scores in the fourth quarter were Aaron Kilgore for a 1 yard run and Brice Bostwick finished off the last Spartan score to make it 26-3. The final two scores were setup by interceptions from Pete Meginnis and Kaleb Mar .
The game was fun for the Spartans as Channel 21 TV in
Lincoln
covered the game and Channel 8 in
Lincoln
interviewed the Spartans live on Sports News. The Spartans continue to build week after week by time might have ran short on the Spartans. The Spartans had beat Southeast and Southwest had been beaten by
Elkhorn
28-27. That meant East and Southwest game would be winner take state berth scenario. But, not so fast Spartans fans. Memorial Stadium in Norfolk had a wrinkle for the Spartans as they clobbered Kearney 30-7 leaving the only option for state would be a Southeast victory over Kearney Thursday night at Seacrest and an East win over Southwest Friday. As they say, anything can happen, but chances became slim and none. A
Norfolk
win over
Elkhorn
and a East win over Southwest would leave a five way tie for District 2. Under that scenario East, Southwest,
Kearney
,
Norfolk
and
Elkhorn
would all have a 3-2 district record.
