| Lincoln, NE - East needed some trickery on Friday night with a double reverse on third and long from its own 20 yard line to finish up a 28-21 victory over Lincoln High. Eric Connor rambled 47 yards on the reverse after Lincoln High had scored two touchdowns in less than 12 seconds to bring the Links to within 7 points with 4:35 to go in the game.
Lincoln High has improved significantly over the past season and had brought two victories into the contest. On the fourth play of the game quarterback Dagan Worton found Jesse Pickett on a 60 yard touchdown pass to set the Links up early with a 7-0 lead. East took its first drive down the field on 7 plays before Grant Ozaki turned the ball back to the Links on the Lincoln High 8 yard line. East had moved the ball down the field mostly on two penalties of 30 yards against the Links. The next possession for each team results in great defense and a 3 and out situation for both squads. On the final possession of the first quarter East had moved the ball down field to the Lincoln High 3 yard line with John Schneckloth running 39 yards on three carries. Schneckloth had a career night with 116 yards on 14 carries. With the ball on the Lincoln High 3, Blake Whitney rambled home the three yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to tie the score 7-7. There was no other scoring in the second quarter of play, both defenses stiffened and East on managed -6 yards on 11 carries and Lincoln High only gained 21 yards on 8 carries. Aaron Bohl again lead the Spartans with 11 tackles on the night followed by Ryan Schrad with 8, Weston Kalloff with 7 and Jared Nelson with 7.
East came out of the locker room fired up and drove down the field on 4 plays covering 65 to give the Spartans a 14-7 lead. East was lead by Schneckloth with a 48 yard run up the right side and Grant Ozaki finishing the drive with a 7 yard rushing touchdown. The East defense came out and shut down Lincoln High on a 3 and out . Blake Whitney recorded a 15 yard sack on Worton back on the Lincoln High yard line. A 32 yard punt by the Links gave the Spartans great field possession on the Links 34 yard line. Ozaki rush for 20 yards and Tahner Pinkman ran for 14 yards on two plays including the 6 yard plunge up the Spartan middle for the score. East now led 21-7 with 7:41 to go in the third quarter and in command of the game. Both teams had been marred all evening with critical penalties and neither team could score in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter started like the second quarter when Jared Nelson rambled 1 yard on the first play of the quarter to give East a commanding 28-7 lead with 11:57 to go in the quarter. Lincoln High quarterback Worton had other ideas as he marched the Links down the field on 14 plays, 65 yards and 7:05 to get the Links to 28-14. East allowed too much room on the onside kick and Lincoln High easily recovered the kick to give them the ball on the East 47 yard line. It only took one play by Worton rushing 47 yards up the middle to score and the Links were back in the game. Lincoln High decided to kick into the end zone on the following kickoff to trap the Spartans back on its own 20 yard line with 4:35 to go in the game. The strategy almost worked had it not been for the double reverse from Ozaki to Schneckloth to Conner that saw Conner run up the sidelines 47 yards to the Lincoln High 33. East put in the hammer bone backfield of Connor Kaiser, Jared Nelson and Blake Whitney and powered the game to the end using up all 4:35 and 10 plays.
Lincoln East is now 2-3 on the season and again will continue its march against Nebraska’s Class A top 10 when they entertain cross town rival Lincoln Southeast next week. The Spartan schedule has six of the top 10 teams in the state on its schedule and a seventh team ranked number 11.
