| Lincoln, NE - East battled with 4th ranked cross-town rival Lincoln Southeast until Brandon Reilly broke the game wide open on a 71 yard punt return at the first quarter. Southwest received the opening kickoff and quarterback Tay Bender gave up the ball when Weston Kalloff caused a force fumble and Aaron Bohl rececovered it at the SW 38 yard line. An eleven yard pass from Grant Ozaki to Austin Kilgore moved the ball the Southwest 21 yard line. East managed to get to the SW 17 yard before Ozaki fumbled the ball back to the Silverhawks with Tyler Hoppes getting the recovery. Two plays later Bohl forced a Jake Jordan Silverhawk fumble and Blake Whitney recovered for the Spartans on the Southwest 35 yard line. Two false start Spartans penalties were a negative to a Spartan 3 and out situation. Both teams, with very good defenses, traded possessions before East’s punt to Reilly. His touchdown gave the Silverhawks a 7-0 first quarter advantage.
Spartans first possession of the second quarter saw two Silverhawk sacks and a hurried 9 yard punt by Tim Kubert. Southwest, starting from the East 34 yard line took 6 plays to score on a Jordan 9 yard run to give Southwest the 14-0 lead. The next kickoff Mason Tyrrell had a good 27 yards return before Easton Edmond stole the ball from him and return the fumble to the East 32 yards line. The Spartan defense came alive and shutdown the Silverhawks on four straight plays to get the ball back with 4:52 to go in the second quarter. Ozaki rushed in the middle and John Schneckloth displayed his speed on a 22 yard ramble up the sideline to the SW 31 yard line. East stalled out again and no further highlights happening before halftime with Southwest leading 14-0.
The third quarter was probably the worst quarter the Spartans have had all year. The Spartans first possession saw an Ozaki sack of 6 yards and a muffed punt fumble for a loss of 15 yards and the Silverhawks taking over on the East 12 yard line. One play later Jordan spiked up the middle to give the Silverhawks a 21-0 lead. The next Spartan possession was no better when Kubert was hurried on his punt again and only managed to get the ball downfield 6 yards. Southwest second possession started on the East 24 yard line and it only took 4 plays to score when Reilly rushed up the middle for the final 8 yards to give Southwest a 28-0 lead. East received the kickoff and started the next possession on the East 19 yard line, with 6: 18 to go in the third quarter. East managed to display some offense as they moved the ball 47 yards down field on 12 plays and consumed the rest of the third quarter. After running out of downs Southwest took over on the Southwest 34 yard line. Five plays and a 37 yard run by E. Douglas-Wiley gave Southwest a 35-0 lead. NSAA high school rules allow the clock to not stop once a 35 point advantage has been made. One quick and time consuming possession by each team ended the game with Southwest scoring a convincing 35-0 victory.
After the first three games, East season appears to be a duplicate of last year except a come from behind win against North Star. East has to match up against a third straight rated opponent with Omaha Central next week. Omaha Central enjoyed a big win against Millard North this week.
